United States and India Launch Green Partnership

According to Voice of America, Manmohan Singh (India’s Prime Minister) and President Barack Obama started a partnership in the green field, insuring that both countries are committed to providing clean energy, making sure that the energy security is insured and trying to combat the change in climate.

Both countries have adhered to a Memorandum of Understanding, which hopefully will contribute to the cooperation in fields like clean energy, energy security and climate change.

The statement from Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, was that both India and US will work on making a cleaner environment. Singh welcome the commitment of Barack Obama to this renewable energy plan, while drawing attention to India’s plan on climate change.

Both leaders affirmed the commitment of both countries towards an economy that uses cleaner energy, while increasing the number of jobs created.

According to Ron Somers, which is the US-India Business Council president, both countries will be very close in the promotion of greener technologies. This improved collaboration in the green energy field will be used to better fight global warming, while developing new technologies and decreasing carbon emissions.

The decrease in carbon emissions have been rejected both by China and India, because they think that richer countries should hold the burden in the process of cutting greenhouse gases. Their belief is that their economy’s growth would take a serious hit if they had to implement cuts in carbon emissions.

Both India and US agreed that the next conference on climate, which will take place at Copenhagen, in December 2009, should be used to talk about cutting emissions in countries that are highly developed, while developing countries should only improve their energy efficiency.

Recently, India announced it would produce 20 Gigawatts of solar power by 2022.

A recent announcement from India was that it would produce by 2022 a quantity of 22 Gigawatts from solar power, though specialists believe that it can’t reach this target. The reason for the doubts is that around 10,000 solar power plants should be built in this time period, in order to reach the objective that India announced.

According to most experts, India has the best shot at progress in this field if it receives technology and financial backing from countries that are richer.
